There is a lot of stories on the web about the visa for fiancee that it is difficult to know whether they are true or not. A lot of information out there is simply not up-to date anymore or plainly non-sense.

For who is the visa for fiancé?

The one asking for a k1 visa has to be an official U.S. citizen who wants to marry a foreigner. You’ll have to marry her/him within 90 days after your love has arrived to the United States. You cannot be married to some-one else – how obvious J – and you should have met each other in person at least once. Well, I reckon a couple of more dates wouldn’t hurt, right?! Especially if you’re about to spend the rest of your life together ..

K1 Visa Timeline

A lot of k1 visa lawyers will tell you that it takes a year or more to get a financee visa. But this is NOT true. Trust me. If you follow the rules of the guide I recommended you, you can easily get a k-1 visa within 4 – 6 months. Or even faster, depending on the country your future partner is coming from. I have a friend from Argentina, and it only took 6 weeks (!!!) for the paperwork to get processed and the fiance k1 visa granted. Isn’t that great!

However, they say that it is not good to apply for fiance visas between January and April of each year. I don’t know if this is true, but I decided to plan ahead and avoided applying during these months. Check out this timeline. They say this is, because the USCIS expects your latest tax year info. Normally, taxes are done in April or March, so when you’ll apply then, first do your taxes and submit them with your application. Do you submit without the most current year’s tax filing, the USCIS will put your application on hold. Waste of time, right?!

THE Interview

The climax of the k1 viza process is THE interview. Many future usa fiancees, including me, approach the visa interview with a sense of fear. I was afraid that I was going to do or say something that could cause my visa to be denied. Also, I got confused about what to bring to the interview, and what not. I have heard about some cases, visa applicants were concerned about sensitive issues in their past and were hoping not to tell it or seek to conceal it.

For those who think of to lie, be advised: consular officers are trained to catch liars who try to obtain a k-1 visa. If you’re caught, it could result in rejection and also a bar on entry to the usa for years.

If you are simply nervous about the k1 visa interview itself, just take a breath, because the interview is only a kind of due diligence to determine whether you are a couple for real and the fiancee is not legally inadmissible to the usa. You’ll survive it, really. I know I did.
